New Programs at the Filberg Heritage Lodge and
Park
Filberg Readers Circle
Join fellow readers, soak up the congenial lodge atmosphere and discuss the
selected book of the month. Unlike many book clubs you don’t have to join
long term, just join in when there is a book that interests you. Reserve a
spot 7:30-9:30 pm on any of the following evenings:
Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 “Broken
for You” by Stephanie Kallos led by Susan Ward.
Tightly packed with layers to peel, Kallos’ debut novel features somewhat
eccentric characters, soft humour, and views of human connections along with
love and forgiveness.
Friday Feb 12, 2010 “Three Day
Road”. Joseph Boyden’s first novel tells the story of a pair of James Bay
Cree who end up in the trenches in World War 1. Loosely based on a true
story this novel reminds us of the cost of war. Wonderfully written with
bouts of humour and passion. Session lead by Mark Glenwright.
Friday March 19, 2010 “The Curious Incident of
the Dog in the Night-time” by Mark Haddon. Step into
Christopher’s special world where all stimuli rate equally and mechanical
mathematical computation is a calming tool. His investigations, using his
favourite novel “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, lead him to uncover family
secrets and to venture outside his familiar safe environment. Haddon, in
leading us into a world fraught with challenges where there are no
conventional coping skills, broadens our perceptive and reveals the impact
of Christopher’s autism on all family members.
A compelling, sometimes touchingly humorous, novel that employs a unique
approach to giving us greater empathy as well as showing there are different
approaches to solving a mystery.
This month’s session will be lead by Alana Gowdry.
